some of our ExPeRience
We offer the unique combination of computer forensics and corporate investigations so electronic evidence
is not “lost in translation” Our key strengths include:
CASE STUDY 1: Aperio Forensics was engaged by a leading food manufacturer in Thailand to investigate the existence of a fraudulent contract with one of their suppliers. It was identified through computer forensics, photoshop forensics and interviews with staff that a recently resigned senior manager in the company had signed a contract without authorization, extending the supplier’s contract by 20 years. Examination determined that the extended contract, although based on the original, had been created and signed after the manager had resigned and therefore the document was not legitimate. The data collected assisted in successfully defending the case brought against the client by the supplier.
CASE STUDY 2: A global advertising agency acquired a Thailand-based agency. The management of the local company were retained in their current positions and agreed to continue to work for the new brand. However, soon after the acquisition, the local company began to report a significant downturn in profits. Through a computer forensic examination, it was established that the senior management of the local company had created a parallel advertising agency. Emails were uncovered implicating the managers in receiving requests for quotes whilst at the global company, and directing those quotes to the newly formed local company. It was also discovered that the senior managers attended a number of meetings representing the new local company, whilst still employed by the global firm. Aperio Forensics gave expert testimony at the Thailand Labour Courts and, as a result of the investigation, the parties agreed to a financial settlement.
CASE STUDY: Staff from a global engineering firm that had recently acquired a company in Singapore were concerned that the local business was not winning any contracts. Preliminary investigations showed that the managers at the local firm who had sold the business had set up a competing business, in contravention of the sales agreement.
Aperio Forensics assisted in drafting the affidavits required for an Anton Pillar Order issued by the Singapore Courts. A co-ordinated operation was then executed using surveillance teams to ensure that the Court documents be served simultaneously. Aperio Forensics attended the execution of the APO’s, and teams of forensic examiners seized the company’s data. Through forensic analysis, it was ascertained that the new company had stolen intellectual property and were manufacturing and distributing identical equipment. Autocad files containing schematic diagrams and catalogs belonging to the global firm were found with the local company logos attached. Eventually, the local company sought a settlement in the Courts.
CASE STUDY: A local female employee at a UK based mining company reported that she had received death threats and was being sexually harassed. A number of parcels containing disturbing articles had been sent to her via the post and a number of threatening emails were received. Aperio Forensics initiated an email tracking investigation and found that the emails originated from a local internet cafe. The computer at the cafe was identified and forensically imaged. A examination of the data found that, around the time the email was sent, the suspect had also accessed his Facebook page and personal email accounts. Concurrently, CCTV footage was obtained from the post office the parcels had been sent from. This confirmed that the person sending the parcels was the same person who had sent the emails. The brief of evidence was handed to the police and the offender was subsequently arrested and charged.
CASE STUDY: Aperio Forensics were called in to investigate a collusion matter for a global telecommunications company based in Chennai. Our interviews with staff identified that a number of employees had paid money to a recruitment firm retained by the telco to source local talent. We discovered, through undercover agents, that for a fee, a candidate could have their CV doctored using inside company information to gain an interview. The candidate was also supplied with the interview questions in advance and received coaching to ensure they were selected for the job. Furthermore, we ascertained that one of the interviewers was on the payroll of the recruitment firm, and was receiving a payment for every person he employed from the candidates supplied by the recruitment firm. The client immediately cancelled the contract with the recruitment firm and dismissed the employee identified as colluding with the company.
CASE STUDY: A leading document management company had a contract with the Japanese government to convert a number of sensitive and highly confidential paper based databases to electronic format. During the period of the contract, an extortion was attempted against the company threatening to release the data to the media. In addition to the forensic investigation, Aperio Forensics conducted a security assessment of the processes and identified a number of areas where the leak could have come from. The process was overhauled significantly, improving the security of the data. The suspect was eventually arrested by the Japanese police in a sting operation and the evidence provided by Aperio Forensics was used in Court to convict the offender with extortion and blackmail offences.
CASE STUDY:An investigation was undertaken for a global advertising company that had a number of subsidiaries in China. It was suspected that the subsidiaries were partaking in a price fixing scam. Whilst it could not be established that there was collusion, a forensic examination of a number of laptops identified staff members that were receiving kickbacks and other inducements from their clients. The people involved had their employment contracts terminated and a clear message was sent to the other employees.
CASE STUDY: A global Oil and Gas company had suspicions that some of its local staff were involved in a fraud relating to the procurement and tendering process of a lucrative contract.
Aperio Forensics initiated a suite of surveillance and other intelligence gathering methods. Additionally, a covert operation was mounted to forensically image the work issued laptops of the suspects. By analyzing the email trails in combination with the suspects’ connections with people operating the local company, it was established that information vital to winning the contract had been leaked.
